Since the beginning of the tournament, Israel has been looking to make a statement and surprise several of the top nations. They have done just that if not more. Playing from the Green group (the lowest group in the tournament, made of mostly new nations,) Israel worked their way up to play against the top teams from the blue group, guaranteeing a top four finish. Yesterday, they faced off with the top team in the FIL in Canada, who themselves were looking to return to the Gold Medal final once again. Many people predicted another rout from the Canadians, seeing the Israel squad as a warm up for the finals. Others believed Israel would step up to the test and give Canada a run for their money. For those who predicted a rout, they were right. Canada, behind four goal games from Mark Matthews and Zachary Greer, who dominate Israel and go on to a 19-3 victory.
In the night cap, the United States and the Iroquois Nationals found themselves in an opening night rematch This time, however, a trip to face Canada for gold was on the line. The loser had Israel waiting for them in the Bronze medal game. In a packed Onondaga Arena, the USA came out hot, going up 2-0 with goals from Joe Walters. The Nationals would then go on an absolute tear, scoring eight unanswered goals from the sticks of Randy Staats, Brett Bucktooth, Lyle Thompson, Craig Point, and Johnny Powless. The Thompson brothers would combine for seven goals on the night as the Iroquois Nationals would score a 17-10 win and a spot in the Gold Medal game. The USA, who were led by Joe Walters with four goals, will now face Israel for the Bronze.
The medal games are scheduled to be held at the Carrier Dome this Sunday. The Bronze Medal game between the USA and Israel will start at 1pm while the Gold Medal game between Canada and Iroquois is scheduled for 4pm. After the games, the closing ceremonies will take place and end what has been an exciting and fun tournament.
