In soccer news, another Syracuse Silver Knight made the best of their summer is up for some major awards. Anthony Grant, who played in the Professional Development League with the Seacoast United Phantoms, is up for the PDL MVP award for this past season.
Last night, Stephen Strasburg returned to the Syracuse Chiefs for a rehab start against the Buffalo Bisons. In front of a crowd of 6,000 plus, Strasburg pitched four innings, striking out five and giving up three earned runs. One of those earned runs came on a balk in the second inning, something you wouldn't expect to see out of the star. The Chiefs would go on to lose to Buffalo 8-5 with Strasburg picking up the loss. I remember seeing him with the Chiefs back in 2010. He was a hard thrower with a ton of potential and a lot of hype (which helped the Chiefs draw their largest crowds.) However, upon seeing his major league career, I think he has become just an average pitcher. He has suffered a variety of injuries and hasn't really done anything spectacular since joining the Nationals. To be honest, I cannot believe the Nationals haven't thought about trading him or putting him lower in the rotation. His stuff is good, but he has yet to reach the levels of an elite pitcher.
