Hockey season is over until October, but the hype for next season is just getting stronger. This doubles, even triples, for the Syracuse Crunch. They are already hosting the All-Star Game and are readying to compete in the new North Divison with all the New York State and Eastern Canadian teams. Now, they are bringing one of their biggest rivalries overseas. Like last preseason, the Crunch are going to have their preseason games in Lyon, France, including a faceoff with the local Lyon team. However, that game is now overshadowed with a match-up between the Crunch and the Utica Comets. The hottest hockey rivalry in
This season has not been exactly great for the Syracuse Chiefs. After winning IL North Division last season and making the postseason for the first time this century, many fans were expecting the Chiefs to keep the momentum rolling into this season. However, the Chiefs have returned to their losing ways seen far too often in seasons past. Right now, the Chiefs hold the worst record in the International League and sit 15.5 games back of first place in the North Division. This past week, the Chiefs did not look nor did they play like a last place team. They managed to win four games in a row against Columbus and Toledo. Then, they entertained fans and raised money through a charity wiffleball game on the lawn of the MOST Wednesday evening. After a rare day off, the Chiefs dropped two very close games against Buffalo before enacting revenge and beating the Bison on Sunday in 10 innings. The win Sunday was especially special with Tony Gwynn Jr. getting the walk off RBI single on the first father's day since the passing of his father, the legendary Tony Gwynn. The Chiefs were able to get another win yesterday, taking down the Charlotte Knights 2-1. Does this streak of good play mean the Chiefs will comeback and win the division...no. That would be a miracle and a half. Can they comeback and earn a playoff spot. Technically, yes but honestly no. They can make a good run and finish with a decent record but I don't think they can dig out of the hole they are in. 15.5 games is too large a deficit to get out of. I know anything can happen in sports, so there is some hope. I am just not promising any miracles happening.
