Saturday, the Crunch traveled east on I-90 to face the Albany Devils. In the last match-up between the squads, it was a goal fest which saw Albany pull out a 7-6 in the Old Barn. This time, defense was the main attraction. The Crunch, behind a terrific 33 save effort from goalie Allen York, pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Devils. Ashton delivered the game winning goal late in the third period while Marchessault tallied a goal in the second period.
Today, the Crunch completed their weekend tilt with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Kristers Gudlevskis had a 29 save shutout with offensive help from Gourde and newly acquired Courtnall.
With this weekend sweep, the Crunch remain on top of the Northeast Division with 80 points, which is seven points clear of Springfield and eight points clear of Hartford. This was a great weekend for the team. They showed they have the ability to win games and come together on both the offensive and defensive ends. Both Guddy and York proved they are strong goalies who can start any game and preform well. The defense gave a huge helping hand to them, including several huge shot blocks during the Adirondack game. For the offense, more players, including the latest additions in Ashton, Courtnall, and Martindale, showed they can score when the team lacks both their captain, Mike Angelidis, and a key scorer in Vladdy. They need to carry this momentum into next weekend when they host the Scranton Penguins and the Utica Comets.
